Hyperbilirubinemia and Kernicterus Clinical Negligence
Hyperbilirubinemia is a severe form of jaundice, which although rare, is a very serious condition in new born babies.
Jaundice, caused by an accumulation of bilirubin, in new born babies is common and normally resolves without treatment. However in some babies, particulary premature babies, the condition can develop as the liver is unable to clear the bilirubin adequately. Babies who are at 'high risk' should be carefully monitored and blood levels of bilirubin should be reviewed if there is a suspicion of hyperbilirubinemia.
Phototherapy is the usual treatment for hyperbilirubinemia however if the condition is advanced a blood transfusion may be required.
If hyperbilirubinemia is untreated or if treatment is delayed due to a delay in diagnosis, kernicterus can develop. Kernicturus is a type of brain damage which can result in cerebral palsy and severe hearing damage.
