Carcinogenic Chemicals in the Workplace
According to Cancer Research UK, cancer-causing chemicals are responsible for an estimated 2% of cancer deaths in the UK, however they tend to only affect employees in certain industries, such as manufacturing.
After initial exposure to the harmful chemical or chemicals, cancers can take as much as 30-50 years to develop; it is therefore possible to make compensation claims for employer negligence, even if you are no longer an employee at the firm, or it has ceased trading.
Certain chemicals are known to be carcinogenic, including arsenic, asbestos, benzene, chromium pigments, some fertilisers and pesticides and various organic solvents.
Can I Claim for a Cancer Caused by Chemicals?
If your exposure to the chemical or chemicals which caused your cancer was the result of negligent behaviour on the part of an employer or immediate superior, it is highly likely you will be able to claim compensation.
Legally, carcinogenic chemicals must carry hazard warnings and their use must be strictly controlled; if you worked with carcinogenic chemicals and were not provided with all the information about the chemicals you were working with, or were not provided with adequate safety equipment, this could constitute employer negligence.
