Contact dermatitis can cause swelling, itching, blistering and flaking of the skin, sometimes even leading to infection and pus formation. It can be caused by contact with allergens or irritants, which can include chemicals, water or biological materials such as plant material or various fungi.
In order to pursue a claim for contact dermatitis it is necessary to show that you have suffered your illness as a result of breach of duty by your employer. There are stringent duties on employers to minimise exposure to harmful substances and ensure that proper protective equipment is provided. Our lawyers will be able to advise you whether your employer is likely to be liable for your exposure.
How do I know if my dermatitis is caused by exposure to work?
It is a good indication that your problems may be related to contact dermatitis if the main areas of skin affected are those that have had contact with a particular substance at work. Similarly, if your co-workers have also suffered contact dermatitis or you find that the condition gets better when you are away from work and returns again on your return, this may be suggestive of contact dermatitis.
There is an exhaustive list of substances that can cause contact dermatitis to develop including, pigments, dyes, resins, latex, rubbers, nickel, sawdust, glues, varnishes, water, animal fees, medicines, thinners, paints, solvents, talc and bleaching agents.
If you are unsure as to whether your condition may be work related contact one of our expert team of lawyers on 0800 054 6570 or fill in our online enquiry form and get advice as to whether or not you have a claim and what steps you can take to protect your health.
