Background to the TalkTalk data leak

In October 2015, personal information belonging to thousands of TalkTalk customers was stolen.

The ICO has imposed a record fine of £400,000 on TalkTalk for failing to protect the exposed information properly.

The information concerned included names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, and, in some cases, bank account details and sort codes.

This serious incident has, understandably, raised huge concerns amongst TalkTalk customers.  The implications are that people could be exposed to identity fraud, the illegal sale and misuse of their information, and other related problems.

What are the risks of the leak?

Private information and personal data have been disclosed without customers’ permission. 

Clearly, people whose details have been stolen could be at risk of identity theft and online fraud.  Many have already received unwanted calls or experienced unusual activity on their bank accounts.

It is possible that some people may have suffered financial loss as a result of the leak.
