Personal Injury

Jane is a Senior Associate and has worked for JMW since 2006, tackling a range of complex Personal Injury cases. She has specialised in acting for people injured whilst riding their bicycles.  She is a keen cyclist and is very familiar with the sport; easily empathising with her clients who love to cycle.  As she trained on the defendant side of the legal system, Jane is familiar with their approach and tactics; a wonderful boost for her cases.

Jane is also a supervisor and works with other members of the team to ensure that they are properly supported by a colleague who is rigorous, thorough and disciplined in her approach.

Why did you join JMW?

I was attracted to JMW at the start of my career as a qualified solicitor primarily because they are a reputable firm with an established personal injury department. They struck me as a friendly and solid firm. I have not been disappointed. I am very happy working here and I believe we have a fantastic team of people in this department.

Key cases

  • Handling a case for a severely injured amateur triathlete who was knocked off his bike and suffered a broken collar bone and serious knee injury requiring an arthroscopy.  Although the defendant admitted liability immediately, their insurer tried to undersettle the claim significantly, and we had to push very hard to ensure the client got what he deserved.  He was eventually awarded £83,281.31.
  • Ensuring settlement of a cycling case where our client hit a pothole and was thrown from his bike whilst on a leisure ride, sustaining injury to his knee that required surgery.  The defendant denied liability throughout the case and we were forced to issue court proceedings.  We had to work very hard to ensure a good settlement on this case, as it was very badly handled by the defendant, culminating in us making an application to strike out their Defence from Court.  Ultimately, we secured £27,000 for the client.
  • Recovering compensation on behalf of a cycling client who was injured after purchasing a freewheel fitted hybrid bike from a bike shop.  Despite returning the bike twice as he didn't feel it was working properly (and being assured nothing was wrong with it), my client subsequently lost control of the bike whilst riding it, due to a mechanical failure.  He sustained injury and I pursued the case, subsequently seeing the bike shop admit liability, to ensure he was compensated for his injuries and the damaged bike.
  • Securing compensation for a client who severely damaged his dominant wrist following an accident at work where the employer had robustly denied liability for the accident and denied the extent of the injury throughout the entire life of the claim, which lasted nearly 6 years. The injury affected his ability to continue working in his chosen profession. The claim settled for £85,000, two weeks before trial.
  • Successfully recovering compensation for a client who had sustained injury after slipping on a spillage in a supermarket. The defendant denied liability throughout the life of the claim, over four years, failing to address the specifics of this case and only caving in after they were put under pressure to provide evidence from a witness whose existence they had failed to disclose previously.

What others say

Mr S, Client: I thank you for all your tolerance, kindness and patience. I will have no hesitation in recommending you to anyone who had been put in the same position as me.

Mr N, Client: Jane Bedford McLaren handled my successful claim for compensation for injuries sustained in an accident.  I was apprehensive about putting the matter in the hands of a solicitor but I need not have worried because the case was handled in a thoroughly efficient and professional manner.  Jane was always there to offer friendly reassurance and to keep me informed as what was happening.  I would have no objection in recommending JMW to others.

Miss C, Client: Just a token of my appreciation to you and Mr Pare on assisting with my case. I enjoyed working with you and it was a pleasure meeting you.

Mrs P, Client: Jane was so understanding and supportive.  The way the defendant handled my case was shocking, however Jane has been patient and worked hard to achieve a settlement for me.  I would have no hesitation in recommending her and JMW to anyone who is in need of legal help and advice for an accident that wasn’t their fault as they will receive a service that is second to none, with wonderful, hardworking individuals at its heart.
