What is Paralysis?

Paralysis is a term that covers a range of injuries where there is a loss of muscle function in part of your body. It can result in a loss of feeling and other bodily functions. Paralysis is not usually caused by problems with the muscles themselves, but by damage to the nerves and the spinal cord, which are used to control those muscles.

Types of Paralysis

There are varying degrees of paralysis that affect different parts of the body, including:

  • Monoplegia, when one limb is paralysed.
  • Hemiplegia, when the arm and the leg on one side of the body are paralysed.
  • Paraplegia, where both legs and sometimes the pelvis and some of the lower body are paralysed.
  • Tetraplegia, where both the arms and legs are paralysed. This is also known as quadriplegia.

Common Causes of Paralysis

Our team has dealt with a wide range of paralysis claims and successfully secured compensation to help sufferers get their lives back on track. There are many ways paralysis can be caused, but the most common we have seen:

  • Road traffic accidents
  • Head trauma
  • Falls
  • Misdiagnosis of a medical condition
  • Surgical errors
  • Sporting accidents
  • Stroke
  • Multiple sclerosis

Regardless of how your paralysis was caused, if it was due to somebody else’s negligence, you are entitled to make a claim for compensation.
