General Medical Council Hearings
Cases involving the medical profession require specialist legal knowledge from a team of solicitors with extensive experience in defending medical professionals against malpractice accusations and other charges.
JMW has a specialist team who have years of experience in defending doctors against General Medical Council (GMC) enquiries, Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) cases and other disciplinary matters.
We employ former medical staff, lawyers and engage expert advocates with a detailed understanding of the procedures involved in GMC / MPTS enquiries, inquests and criminal investigations. We recognise that without careful and positive representation, complaints can have far reaching effects on a practice. Our services therefore include reputation management, bespoke teams for each matter and access to a network of leading experts in disciplines relevant to the investigation.
The General Medical Council can take action for many reasons, including:
- Poor performance by a medical professional
- Criminal conviction or caution
- A decision made by a regulatory body
- Physical or mental illness
The nature of the investigation will depend upon the areas of concern raised in the complaint but an enquiry may involve obtaining:
- Further documentary evidence from an employer or the complainant
- Witness statements or expert reports on clinical matters
- An assessment of the doctor's performance
- An assessment of the doctor's health
JMW Solicitors can offer comprehensive legal advice and assistance at every stage of an investigation by the GMC. We have dealt with all of the procedures used by the regulatory body including Fitness to Practice panels, appeals and applications for restoration to the medical register.
