Government fund is not the only answer to corporate finance for acquisitions

Although the Government's proposal for a National Investment Corporation (NIC) fund to help small businesses is failing to attract its targeted £1bn support from financial institutions, there are many other ways of accessing corporate finance for business expansion and consolidation including mergers and acquisitions.

The NIC is a much-vaunted part of the official strategy to help the UK out of recession and is intended to be similar to the Industrial and Commercial Finance Corporation, which was set up after the second world war to finance small businesses and later evolved into 3i.

However, as of late 2009, not all investment banks and building societies which were approached to contribute to NIC had responded positively and taxpayers' money may have to be used to bail out the scheme. There have also been difficulties over the administration of the NIC and how credits or loans will be made available to those seeking the new line of credit.

The challenging world-wide economic difficulties since 2008 have made access to corporate and commercial finance less easy than for many years previously and it's more important than ever to have the best legal advice when considering buying or selling a business, financing an acquisition or other restructuring.
