JMW take on Heaton Park in support of Tommy's and Ronald McDonald Houses

26th March 2019 Clinical Negligence

On Sunday 24 March a team from JMW took to Heaton Park bright and early to run in aid of our charities of the year; Tommy’s and Ronald McDonald Houses. We have raised more than £3,500 which is a fantastic achievement and will provide many nights of accommodation for parents to be close to their children when they are in hospital and fund research that will prevent couples from suffering the tragedy of stillbirth and premature birth.

The team ran varying distances from 5k, 10k and a half marathon. We were also joined by Adam Powsney, an ambassador for Tommy’s and JMW client, who ran with the 10k runners.

Our half marathon runner led the way at 9.30 am with a smile on her face, whilst the 5k and 10k runners waited in anticipation to begin their races at 10 am.

The course which began and ended at the centre of Heaton Park, consisted of a 5k undulating lap. Along the course the team ran along the paths of the park running past a lake filled with various wildlife, passers-by walking their four legged friends and plenty of supporters cheering the runners on. The most memorable part of the course was between 2.5k and 3k where the team was faced with a gruelling uphill battle towards the iconic Heaton Hall. I’m sure all of us will agree that this was by far the most challenging part of the course! The team were then led to explore a further section of the park before coming to the end of the 5k lap.

The 10k route consisted of two laps, whilst the course for the half marathon differed slightly on the first lap and then involved four laps of the course.

With the finish line in sight, cheering and applause could be heard spurring the runners on for the last few meters. All runners were greeted at the finish line by an announcer calling out our names, a well-deserved medal and much needed snacks!

I am happy to report that everyone made it back in one piece and did absolutely brilliantly. The Manchester weather was even on our side, if not a little windy!

Despite the early start and our tired legs, this was a small price to pay in comparison to the parents, families and children who turn for support from Tommy’s and Ronald McDonald Houses, two charities extremely close to our hearts at JMW.

Tommy’s funds research into miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth as well as provides free pregnancy health information for parents-to-be. The work Tommy’s has achieved so far is helping to reduce the number of families having to experience the heart breaking loss of a baby and help make pregnancy and birth safer for all.

Ronald McDonald Houses provide free ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families with children in hospital, helping to take some of the stress away from travel, and allow families to stay close to their child when they’re at their most vulnerable and need all the emotional and practical support available. Ronald McDonald Houses have also helped a number of our staff at JMW.

If you would like to make a donation, our fundraising page is still open.
