The medical negligence department of full-service Manchester law firm JMW Solicitors LLP has been announced as the official sponsor of a campaign to raise money for Henshaws Society for Blind People, the city’s oldest charity.

The team in JMW's medical negligence department is throwing its weight behind Bright for Sight in more ways than one. As well as being the official sponsors they will also be taking part in their own bright-themed fundraiser.

On 20 September solicitor Ciaran Harper and paralegal Rheanne Laybourn will be taking part in a sponsored 60m blindfolded abseil from the Bell Tower at the Trafford Centre, wearing their brightest and boldest attire.

Henshaws' Bright for Sight campaign aims to raise awareness of visual impairments as well as funds to help Henshaws to provide its vital community services. Most activities will be held on Bright for Sight day on 9 October to coincide with World Sight Day with some also being held in the run up.

Eddie Jones, head of medical negligence at JMW, said that as the firm had represented numerous people who had needlessly lost their sight it was great to be able to support Henshaws’ work in this way.

He commented: “Henshaws does vital work to support the blind and visually impaired community and as we have seen first-hand the difficulties these people face we are delighted to be able to support its services. We hope many other local businesses and people are encouraged to get involved with Bright for Sight to help to make 2014 the most successful yet.”

Glen Lockett, head of fundraising at Henshaws, said: “The technology and training we hope to be able to fund through Bright for Sight will have a hugely profound and positive impact on the lives of people who are affected by a visually impairment or another disability. It will increase the service users’ independence, help them to learn new skills and improve their connectivity with the wider world.”

JMW has helped numerous people who have lost their sight due to medical errors to challenge this poor care and secure compensation to help them to cope. Recently Eddie Jones secured £750,000 for one client who needlessly lost their sight because of appalling treatment of a condition called temporal arteritis.
