Pleural Plaques Claims

Pleural plaques are areas of scar tissue on the membrane of the lungs that is caused by exposure to asbestos. If you have suffered from pleural plaques due to working in a hazardous industrial environment and go on to contract another asbestos-related disease, this illness could be used to demonstrate your wrongful exposure to asbestos and could help you to make a compensation claim for other asbestos-related diseases you may be suffering from.

Sadly, current legislation in England and Wales is such that you cannot claim for compensation if you suffer from pleural plaques alone, even if your suffering is as a result of another party's negligence. However, this is not the case if you live in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where making a pleural plaques claim may still be possible.

What Our Clients Say

What are Pleural Plaques?

Pleural plaques are a common risk of working in an industrial setting where there has been excessive or sustained use of asbestos. It is the name given when the two-layered membrane surrounding the lungs and inside lining of the rib cage become thickened and a chalky material accumulates there.

It is important to remember that pleural plaques can be harmless and they need not increase the risk of you contracting other asbestos-related diseases, such as mesothelioma or pleural thickening. Although they do not represent a premalignant form of cancer, they do highlight your exposure to asbestos.

If you contract another asbestos-related disease, the presence of pleural plaques can aid any claim for compensation regarding wrongful exposure to asbestos.
