JMW Lawyer wins defamation success against The Times

A lawyer from Manchester based law firm JMW Solicitors LLP has successfully acted for Mark Wilkinson in a defamation case against The Times newspaper.

Mr Wilkinson instructed Ian Hemingway from JMW Solicitors in relation to an article published on the website. The article’s sub-heading read “These Anglo Saxon treasures were illegally sold by ‘nighthawk’ scavenger Mark Wilkinson.” Mr Wilkinson objected to the article as he felt that the heading was defamatory and the article suggested that Mr Wilkinson had taken part in an illegal activity.

Times Newspapers Limited agreed to publish an apology online, amend the original article and pay Mr Wilkinson damages and his legal costs.

Mr Wilkinson’s Solicitor, Ian Hemingway, from JMW Solicitors LLP said:

“The article caused much distress for Mark Wilkinson, as it portrayed him as taking part in illegal activities. Mr Wilkinson has been a metal detectorist for over 25 years and strongly denies any wrongdoing.  He has worked closely with the Worcestershire County Council Archaeological Services Department for many years and has always sought to abide by the Treasure Act 1996. He is extremely pleased that the Times has recognised the mistake, and issued him with an apology and amended the article.”
