Getting to know..Raana Afsarpour

27th February 2015

We asked our new Solicitor, Raana Afsarpour, a few questions to get to know her a little better beyond the legal.

So Raana..

How did you first start working in Law?

Well, apart from a very early interest in being a lollipop lady, I haven't ever wanted to do anything else. That's probably because I watched too much Ally McBeal. It sounds a bit rudimentary now, but I really just wanted to help people and I saw being a lawyer as a pretty decent way to do that. When I finished my LPC, I took the first job I could find a temporary placement 50 miles from my home. I spent hours on the M60 every day and worked as hard as I could. Afterwards, I used that first job as an example of my dedication and commitment to working in the law, and the rest, as they say, is history.

What is your favourite thing about working in Law?

It's a useful profession. I enjoy working with people and successfully concluding difficult cases.

If you didn't work in Law what would you do?

I've always wondered! I would probably start a business. I've considered being a party planner, a caf owner and even opening a dating agency.

What's the one thing you can't live without?

My loved ones, including my lovely Beagle, Bobby.

Who inspires you? (personally or professionally)

Professionally, those who have battled adversity to become successful and well regarded in their field. Especially those who give something back to the profession. Personally, people who make it to the gym more than once a week I take my hat off to you!

If you were a superhero, what superpower would you have?

I'd love to fly. No more running for the bus in the morning.

What nicknames do you have?

Raa, Raans, and to my family I'm Raana Banana Cake.

What was the last book you read?

The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Not the light hearted holiday read I'd hoped.

If you hosted a dinner party, what three people (dead or alive) would you invite?

1. Lady Gaga, because she's very zany so would probably provide entertainment.

2. Kate Middleton, because we're all a bit fascinated by her. Plus her reaction to Gaga could be priceless.

3. One of my best friends to enjoy it with me.

What question would you ask the next person undertaking this Q&A?

What was the last song you listened to be honest!

Question from previous participant Claire Carlo:

What question would you ask the next person undertaking this Q&A?

If I came round for dinner what would make for me? (Because it's good to have friends who can cook!)

You'd probably get my classic offering, 'The Bird'. This is the name my friends and I have given to my regular dinner party menu which includes a huge roast chicken with a variety of salads, roasted vegetables, cous cous and crusty breads.
