Work Experience at JMW

1st September 2015

I was very excited to start my work experience at JMW. I had previously spent 4 months on the JMW Business Mentoring Scheme in partnership with Salford Foundation Trust.

I was mentored by Rheanne Laybourn, a paralegal in the Clinical Negligence Department. My time with Rheanne helped me to understand the business skills required in order to succeed in law and helped me to make an informed decision as to what educational route I would like to pursue. I have decided to pursue the CILEx route. The most enjoyable aspect about being mentored by Rheanne was being able to speak to somebody who was approachable and had a genuine interest in helping me develop my legal career.

Having the opportunity to gain some work experience was a fantastic prospect and I really enjoyed my time with Evan Wright (Partner) and Sam Healey (Associate) in the Business Crime and Regulation Department. I was very excited to spend time in this Department as it is an area of law that interests me a lot. I was very impressed with how approachable and helpful Evan and Sam were; despite their seniority within the team they made me feel very welcome.

Throughout my time in the department I was given a number of tasks. I assisted with some administrative tasks; copying and scanning financial documents, receipts and invoices. I also took minutes during a police interview, drafted a witness statement and scheduled photographic evidence and proof read documents disclosed by the prosecution providing a summary and schedule. I provided a note with regard to research into the current legal status of a Limited Liability Company. I also had the opportunity to shadow Damien Simmonds (Associate) in the Motoring Offence Team attending the Magistrates Courts. I found this to be particularly enjoyable.

My time as a work experience student at JMW provided a unique snapshot into the working life of a solicitor in a law firm. I can happily say JMW surpassed my expectations and I really enjoyed my time with Rheanne, Evan, Sam and Damien. I would recommend JMW to any law student looking for work experience. I was given a variety of task to do and everyone was extremely friendly and informative.
