As a socially responsible company, we are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint through a range of environmental initiatives. JMW’s commitment to environmental responsibility is embedded deeply within its core business strategies and practices. Our aim is to minimise the environmental impact of our work and make sure that environmental issues are taken into consideration across everything we do.

Our CSR Committee and Board of Directors are committed to reducing the firm’s impact on the environment. We engage in a variety of environmental activities, which include advancing sustainable practices, using renewable energy sources and implementing sustainable measures in our day-to-day operations. Currently, 60% of the energy we use comes from renewable sources, supporting our broader ESG commitments. We also work with local caterers who use sustainable packaging, and we operate ink cartridge recycling across our offices as part of our responsible sourcing and waste-reduction efforts.

These efforts support our aim of contributing to long-term sustainable development and reflect our wider commitment to ethical supply chain management and responsible business practices. By encouraging employee engagement and fostering a culture that values environmental aspects of our work, we support employee satisfaction and help everyone at JMW feel involved in creating a more environmentally responsible workplace.

Our Membership of the Legal Sustainability Alliance

JMW is a proud member of the Legal Sustainability Alliance (LSA), a network of law firms committed to improving environmental sustainability across the legal sector. The LSA supports organisations in reducing their environmental impact through collaboration, shared learning and responsible business practices.

Our involvement with the LSA reflects our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and aligns with our wider CSR and ESG objectives. Through this membership, we gain access to best-practice guidance on reducing carbon emissions, managing resources responsibly and integrating sustainable development into everyday business operations.

Participation in the LSA also enables us to benchmark our environmental performance against sector standards, raise awareness within the firm and further engage employees in sustainability initiatives. By working alongside other socially responsible firms, we continue to strengthen our environmental strategy and contribute to collective efforts to address climate change and environmental challenges.

Our Environmental CSR Activities

At JMW, our dedication to the environment is demonstrated through our day-to-day commitment to adopt sustainable practices and ESG initiatives that are proactive and impactful. By integrating environmental responsibility into our operations, we aim not only to reduce our environmental footprint and greenhouse gas emissions, but also to fulfil our social responsibilities as a leading law firm.

Here are some examples of how we implement our environmental CSR strategy:

Recycling: We have established recycling facilities on every floor of our offices to handle plastic, glass, paper and cardboard. All paper waste undergoes confidential shredding and recycling by a certified contractor. We also take part in Costa Coffee’s recycling scheme for coffee cups and operate an ink cartridge recycling system, helping reduce waste across the business.

Energy efficiency: To reduce energy consumption, we have installed automated lighting systems that switch off when not in use. Air conditioning is turned off during non-core business hours to conserve energy. These measures support our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving our overall environmental performance.

Water conservation: By replacing traditional bottled water machines with mains-fed water coolers, we have significantly reduced plastic waste and improved the sustainability of our office environment.

Sustainable printing: We encourage staff to print only when necessary and to use both sides of the paper for multi-page documents. All marketing materials are printed on recycled paper using ISO 14001-accredited printers.

Sustainable transportation: our involvement with the Cycle Scheme initiative encourages employees to cycle to work. We prioritise teleconferencing and video conferencing to reduce travel requirements, and where travel is unavoidable, public transport is used where possible. These efforts are supported by a dedicated travel coordinator.

Refillable products: Across our offices, we use refillable dispensers for items such as soaps and cleaning products, helping reduce single-use waste.

Laptop recycling: We recently donated over 60 recycled laptops to Manchester Youth Zone, Foundation 92 and the Golden Oldies, supporting our charity partners while managing electronic waste responsibly.

Through these environmental CSR efforts, JMW aims to respond to environmental challenges, support responsible sourcing practices and contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability. This forms a key part of our long-term commitment to environmental responsibility, corporate citizenship and ESG principles.
