Melissa is a Partner in the Clinical Negligence Department. She joined JMW in 2006 and runs a caseload of complex claims including cerebral palsy and spinal injury cases.
Her recent settlements include obtaining a £13 million care package in 2021 for a child who suffered catastrophic hypoglycaemic brain damage at birth after midwives failed to ensure he was feeding properly.
Other notable settlements include cases involving two children who have severe cerebral palsy due to maternity errors which settled for more than £22 million, enabling her young clients to have the lifelong specialist care they require.
Cauda equina syndrome is another area Melissa has significant expertise in and in 2021 she secured £900,000 to assist a client whose life has been devastated by negligent treatment of the condition.
Melissa has been ranked in legal industry guide Chambers and Partners for several years, with the 2023 edition quoting a source as saying she is 'realistic, tenacious and good with clients'
The 2023 edition of legal industry bible the Legal 500 stated that Melissa is a key member of the JMW team and 'has significant experience in cases involving birth injuries, neonatal jaundice (kernicterus) and hypoglycaemia. She also acts for adults in cases involving strokes and cauda equina syndrome.'
Melissa is a member of the Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel which confirms her expertise and experience in the field of clinical negligence.
In her spare time, Melissa enjoys travelling and cycling, having completed the departmental ‘Coast to Coast’ bike ride in aid of charity.
