Scaling the Yorkshire Three Peaks for people with vision loss

2nd August 2022 Clinical Negligence

By Katy Coleman, a paralegal in the JMW clinical negligence team

On 16 July Danisha Jackson, Maddy Langmead, Kat Smith, Georgie Whitworth and I took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge on behalf of Henshaws, one of JMW’s partner charities supporting those living with sight loss and other disabilities. JMW is supporting Henshaws through donations and fundraising and is providing specialist legal help to any service users who need it.

We knew that we would be raising funds for an incredible cause but were also looking forward to the personal challenge!

We met more than 70 other Henshaws walkers in Horton-in-Ribblesdale bright and early at 8am and, after some flapjacks and some encouraging words from the Henshaws team, we headed towards the first peak, Pen-y-Ghent. After the descent, we faced a 10-mile hike cross-country to Ribblehead viaduct where we had a very short stop before tackling Whernside! Although we were all shattered after the second descent, we still had a further walk to the final peak, Ingleborough, before making the final (very steep!) ascent to the trig point. From there on it was all down hill but the walk back to Horton did seem to last a while, especially with very sore knees!

Weather on the day was fantastic – luckily it wasn’t as hot as the 38 degrees we had just a couple of days later! However, 20 degrees definitely felt hot enough whilst carrying our heavy packs up three mountains! We agreed that the most challenging parts of the day were coping with the strain on our feet and knees. However, there was amazing camaraderie and we all kept each other going and had a huge sense of achievement when crossing the finish line! It was also fantastic to get to know some of the Henshaws team and it was great to share a few pints at the pub back in Horton.

The challenge is to complete the walk in under 10 hours - we all managed this with time to spare and we are so pleased to have raised a fantastic total of £1,275 so far. Thank you so much to all who have donated and, if anyone would like to sponsor us, you are still able to do so here.
