Consultant Manchester Employment
Will joined JMW in January 2017 as a Consultant in the Employment Department.
Will specialises in police law with a focus on employment rights, the terms and conditions of police officers, regulatory law and public law. He has been involved in many of the most important police employment cases over the last few years as well as advising police staff associations such as the Police Superintendent Association of England and Wales and the National Police Chief’s Council (as now is) on matters of national interest.
Recent cases include:
Police Superintendents Association of England and Wales and others v Chief Constable of Bedfordshire Police  EWHC 2173 (Admin). – The judicial review of the lawfulness of a chief constable forcing police officers to retire.
The Queen on the Application of AB v A Chief Constable and AB v A Chief Constable  EWHC 1965 (QB). – Leading case on references and reference policies involving an employer altering an agreed reference after resignation.
Chief Constable of West Midlands Police & Others v Harrod and others  IRLR 790. – High profile age discrimination case involving hundreds of police officers and millions of pounds in damages.
R (on the application of Rhodes) v Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire  All ER (D) 232 (May) – Successful application for an injunction to reinstate a chief constable suspended by a police and crime commissioner.
Will graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in History and Sociology in 2004 and then achieved his GdipL and BVC from Manchester Metropolitan University. After being called to the bar, Will was appointed Head of Employment Law at Canter Levin & Berg in Liverpool and thereafter was a partner at LHS Solicitors in Manchester.
Will has a strong interest in literature, both reading and writing, and enjoys fishing, art and music.
