Manchester Law Firm Receiving Enquiries from City Link Employees

The employment team at JMW Solicitors LLP has already been contacted by over 100 employees from parcel delivery company City Link regarding a possible group employment action against City Link, who entered administration on Christmas day.

At the start of January the administrator (EY) announced that 2,586 staff would be made redundant and as of 15 January 51 depots closed permanently. JMW has been contacted by  former City Link employees  from depots nationwide including Ashford, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Glasgow, Lincoln, Preston, Manchester, Durham and Scunthorpe wanting to sign-up to make a claim .

Confusion has been common about whether an individual can make a claim when their Employer has gone into Administration.

There are two main ways in which former City Link employee may be entitled to become part of the Group Action.

1.)   All dismissed employees are entitled to notice pay (up to 12 weeks depending upon length of service) and up to 6 weeks’ accrued holiday pay which if unpaid can to some extent be recovered from the Department of Trade and Industry.

2.)   All employees who have worked at a depot with 20 or more employees will be entitled to become part of a collective bargaining group and pursue further compensation of up to 8 weeks’ pay from the Department of Trade and Industry.

Whilst these cases are at a very preliminary stage, the early indications are that each employee may well recover several thousands of pounds depending upon how the case progresses.

JMW  have previously been instructed in other similar and highly successful group actions against JJB Sports, Farmright Group and recently won  a three year battle on behalf of 120 former employees of Sitel UK Limited who took Sitel to an Employment Tribunal and were awarded  £200,000.

Commenting on the planned Group Action, Carl Moran, a Partner in the employment team who specialises in group actions commented;

“Our experience in similar Group Actions has been that as soon as we begin to receive enquiries from employees, the case quickly gathers momentum and we are able to drive the case forward by establishing a critical mass of employees wishing to join in with the claim. These cases can often be hard fought, but that is what we are here for, it is what we are good at, and we expect a successful outcome. ”

JMW would like any former employees of City Link to get in contact with a member of the team if they would like to benefit from joining in the Group Action. Please contact the dedicated team on 0845 241 7976 or email as soon as possible.
