JMW’s Employment Team Welcomes Enquiries from PaperlinX UK

Manchester-based law firm JMW Solicitors LLP is inviting employees from PaperlinX UK to get in touch with our employment experts if they have been made redundant, or are facing redundancy. The company, a subsidiary of an Australian firm based in Northampton, has closed many of its UK plants, making up to 700 people redundant, with many more in danger of losing their jobs.

Employees are urged to contact the employment law team for a full investigation into the circumstances of their redundancy, taking a look at their treatment and, if necessary, representing them in an Employment Tribunal.

The paper merchant was the UK’s largest merchanting group, handling around £40m worth of paper and printing supplies a month. Unfortunately, due to the industry facing an increasingly challenging environment as demand falls and digital communications rise, administrators have been called in to maximise the value of the business and to find a buyer.

Joint administrators Matt Smith and Neville Khan, from Deloitte, have been brought in to seek a buyer for the business and its assets, which will continue to trade in five sites including the Northampton head office.

JMW will investigate and ensure that all redundancies have followed the stringent procedures and guidelines employers have to abide by, and are well placed to provide comprehensive legal advice to all those involved after assisting more than 350 former Citylink employees in a similar claim.

When a company decides to make redundancies, it must:

  • Ensure all procedures are carried out fairly and in accordance with statutory procedures
  • Provide an appropriate consultation period that complies with current UK laws
  • Be fully aware of its responsibilities to help former employees find alternative employment.

Many employees will have been made aware of their redundancy entitlements but many will not be aware that if the prescribed consultation procedures were not followed, then they will be entitled to an additional award of up to 90 days’ pay, up to 8 weeks of which should be guaranteed by the National Insurance Fund.

“Every redundant employee is entitled to make a claim for this additional payment, irrespective of the amount of time they worked at PaperlinX, even if they do not qualify for a redundancy payment. To enforce this additional award though, the employees need to obtain an Employment Tribunal judgment which is our area of expertise.  

Employment Tribunal time limits are very strict in these circumstances and if people do wish to bring a claim we would urge them to get in touch with us as soon as possible.
