How to avoid getting 'Mugged Off'

20th July 2017 Family Law

Now that Love Island has ended, the true test of the couples' relationships will begin. How will the couples fair on The Outside? Will true love go the distance?

If you do decide to put all your eggs in one basket it is a good idea to make sure that you think about the potential relationship pitfalls from the outset. A person could be your type on paper, however they may not be your happily ever after. Here are some helpful hints for the islanders to help them avoid being financially mugged off:

  1. Get a Cohabitation Agreement. If you own a house and decide that you want your partner to move in, consider speaking to a family lawyer first. You have grafted to buy a house and a partner who lives with you may acquire rights over that property. It is best to be fully informed about the rights and responsibilities which arise on cohabitation before taking the plunge.
  2. Consider a Deed of Trust. If you and your partner decide to crack on with buying a house together, speak to a private client lawyer about how the purchase should be dealt with. If you and your partner are making unequal contributions to the deposit it is important that you understand the options available to protect yourself and the implications if you don't.
  3. Think about a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Pre-Nups are more common that people think and are now regularly entered into by couples prior to getting married. If you have property, inheritance or an interest in a business you should seriously consider obtaining a Pre-Nup. Speak to a family lawyer and discuss your options it is better to be safe than sorry.

Kem and Amber have been voted this year's winners, with Kem choosing the share his £50,000 winnings with his new love Amber. The couple found love in the sun, however when reality bites will there be wedding bells or trouble in paradise? Whether you've found love online, on TV or on Love Island there are some real life love lessons which everyone needs to be aware of. Don't be mugged off, be smart and you'll be winner.
