What is Identity Fraud?

Identity fraud is a form of wrongdoing where a criminal applies for new products, such as credit cards, bank accounts and loans, using somebody else’s stolen identity. 

Criminals often rely on the fact that opening an account is easy and there are usually minimal hurdles to overcome.

Fake accounts are then set up in your name, without your knowledge, to take advantage of your credit and access funds quickly.  

Signs that you have been defrauded include:

  • Receiving letters or emails confirming the opening of new cards or loans that you didn’t apply for
  • Subscriptions or Direct Debit payments appearing which you don’t recognise

How to Report Fraud

If you have been a victim of fraud, the first thing you should do is contact Action Fraud to report the crime via its online fraud reporting tool or by calling 0300 123 2040. You will be given the option to receive free and confidential emotional support and practical help from Victim Support, a charity that helps those affected by crime.

You should then contact your bank, credit card or loan company to let them know that the new account was set up fraudulently.
