Successful compensation claim for client with salmonella poisoning

In August 2015 Mr K went on a package holiday with Expedia to Egypt and as a result of the food and drink consumed at the hotel he suffered salmonella poisoning which caused symptoms of gastric illness. His symptoms ruined his holiday, were unpleasant and debilitating, and lasted for 6 weeks.  Mr K Instructed solicitors within our specialist cross border team and a letter of claim was submitted on 17th August 2016. We pursued the claim under Package Travel Regulations 1992. Liability was denied and court proceedings were issued. We pursued the matter to trial for Mr K,   where the judge found for him and awarded damages including interest in the sum of £2983.45.

Whilst Mr K made a full recovery salmonella poisoning can have serious side effects, it can cause a reactive arthritis and can even be fatal in certain people, including young children and the very old. Humans become infected generally through contaminated water or food.  If you have gastric symptoms that don’t quickly resolve we would always recommend medical treatment, as tests can identify salmonella at an early stage enabling appropriate treatment to be given to you.
