Head injury victim Mohammed says: "You can always do everything you want"
A head injury can be devastating, stopping sufferers from leading a normal life. But for Bradford resident, 22-year-old Mohammed Danyal, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Mohammed, of Heaton, was knocked over by a taxi driver in a hit and run incident in 1998, when he was just seven-years-old. The incident, which happened as Mohammed was leaving a Mosque in Batley, near his Grandmother’s house, gave him severe head injuries and left him unconscious for several weeks. When Mohammed woke up, he had to re-learn how to walk and talk.
Despite doctors saying he wouldn’t finish school, Mohammed refused to let his accident get in the way of living a normal life. He has gone on to complete a law degree at the University of Bradford and is working hard to get a foothold in the industry he is passionate about.
Manchester law firm JMW Solicitors LLP has just provided Mohammed with voluntary work experience where, alongside gaining an understanding of the legal world first hand, he filmed a video talking about his accident, his experiences and his belief that head injury shouldn’t rule a victim out from every day life.
He said: “When I woke up after the accident, I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t walk or talk, I kept getting headaches and falling down. It wasn’t easy, but my parents helped me learn to walk and talk again. When I was better, I went back to school and started again. I worked hard, and I was really pleased to get strong enough A-Levels that would let me do law at university, so I applied and got accepted onto the course. I may have had a head injury, but I wasn’t going to let it define me.”
Gordon Cartwright, a head injury specialist and partner at JMW Solicitors, has been working with Mohammed. Gordon said: “Mohammed has shown real dedication by coming into the firm and working with us. While he’s been here, he’s sat in on case meetings, worked on file notes, and has showed me that he’s got the key traits a lawyer needs; dedication and determination.
“Mohammed and I discussed my work to provide legal help to the victims of head injuries, and he suggested putting a video together for the website that would help some of JMW’s clients and their families understand more about what the longer term effects of head injury are. I thought it was an excellent idea, and he’s worked with me to put the content together. I have been really proud of him and the work he’s put in during his time at JMW.”
Mohammed said: “Personal Injury law is definitely something I want to go into because I can relate to people who’ve had an accident. I can appreciate where people are coming from, tell them about my experiences and what I’ve accomplished, and help them. I’m very grateful to JMW for all that they’ve done. I’ve really gained a lot from them and hopefully it will stand me in good stead for what I’m looking to do in the future.
“To me, just because you’ve had a head injury, doesn’t mean you can’t do stuff. People will try to tell you that you can’t do stuff, but you can always do everything you want. The doctors told me I wouldn’t be able to finish school, or go to university, and look where I am.”
Mohammed’s video is now live on the JMW website, www.jmw.co.uk/news/videos
