The Department

At JMW, we offer legal advice and assistance on a wide range of issues pertaining to reputation management, privacy and data subject rights, and engagement with the media (including the Press, television platforms and the growing use of social media).

Our Media and Reputation Management team regularly handles a wide range of reputational and media law issues, supporting the firm's corporate clients, high net worth individuals, or those with a public profile. The team also acts for individuals looking to enforce and protect their legal rights. 

The Role

We are seeking a qualified Solicitor (c.2+ PQE) to join the Manchester Commercial Litigation team as a Solicitor or Associate Solicitor. 

The team’s work covers all aspects of reputation management and engagement with the media, including pre-publication advice or assisting corporate clients in dealing with a data subject access request, providing a solid and rounded caseload, including:

  • Pre-publication and post-publication
  • Crisis reputation management, including defamation and privacy complaints ranging from:
    • The removal of damaging online reviews
    • Preventing the publication of defamatory material by a newspaper
    • Providing advice to a business on how to handle allegations of misconduct in the workplace
    • Advising a business that may find itself under increased media scrutiny where its best practices are under regulatory investigation
  • Obtaining or defending urgent injunctive relief
  • Defamation and malicious falsehood claims
  • Obtaining court restrictions in ongoing or anticipated court proceedings
  • Protecting confidential information and intellectual property rights, including preparing non-disclosure agreements or licensing agreements, or dealing with breach of confidence claims, such as misuse of confidential information by a former employee
  • Harassment, including tackling anonymous online ‘trolls’ and cyber security
  • Advising on obligations under data protection legislation, including providing advice on a potential or actual data breach of reporting obligations to the Information Commissioner's Office, or responding to a data subject access request

The successful candidate will be managing their own caseload, as well as supporting partner Rebecca Young, acting in often high profile and urgent matters.

This is a full time position (35 hours a week) and hybrid working is available, typically one day a week remote. 

Role & Responsibilities

1.     The ability to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of legal principles and court procedures in relation to general litigation, and in particular, defamation, privacy, breach of confidence, U K GDPR, harassment.

2.     Experience of county and high court litigation, and the Media List.

3.     Good management of time recording, billing and recovery of costs and disbursements.

4.     Full understanding of the Solicitors Accounts Rules.

5.     The ability to recognise own limitations and to refer to the Head of Department in appropriate circumstances.

6.     Providing legal updates and contributing to blog writing posts.

Desirable Skills/Knowledge

1.     Experience in defamation / privacy / UK GDPR / breach of confidence / harassment matters. 

2.     Experience of injunctive relief.

3.     Pre-publication advice.

4.     Team player.

5.     Full working knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and requirements of the Media List.

6.     The ideal candidate will have an aptitude for business development.
