JMW is recruiting for an experienced Data Protection Lead to join the Compliance department, based at our head office in Spinningfields, Manchester.

The successful individual will have primary responsibility for the firm’s compliance with data protection and privacy law. They will be a core part of the Risk & Compliance team, as well as working with the IT department, and particularly the cyber team.

While relevant data protection experience is essential, applicants do not need to be legally qualified or to have worked in a law firm previously.

The role is primarily based in our Manchester office and hybrid working is available (one day per week). There may be occasional travel to our offices in London and Liverpool as required.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining data protection, information security and cyber security policies;
  • Maintaining the firm’s information asset register and records of processing;
  • Being the internal expert on data protection – helping the compliance analysts deal with routine queries and handling more complex queries;
  • Handling data requests, such as subject access requests and erasure requests.
  • Working with the IT department, particularly the cyber team, to monitor the effectiveness of the firm’s information and cyber security controls;
  • Assisting the Head of Risk & Compliance with cyber liability insurance renewal;
  • Working with all departments to identify emerging and current risks, plus working with them to devise and implement a plan to mitigate the risks;
  • Reviewing commercial agreements from a data protection perspective;
  • Writing and delivering, and awareness-raising of, training courses and guidance to all departments;
  • Research and technical advice on data protection and privacy law.
