Attending the Saffie Book Launch

I recently had the privilege of attending the launch of Saffie, the moving account of the youngest victim of the Manchester Arena bombing through the eyes of her incredibly courageous parents Lisa and Paul Roussos, and written by the talented author and Sunday Times Journalist, David Collins.

Lisa and Paul were part of the panel, together with David and Andy Burnham, who at the time of the bombing was only 17 days into his tenure as Mayor of Manchester.

The book is a tribute to Saffie’s short life, her father Paul captured it best when he called it “a love letter to Saffie”.

As a clinical negligence and public inquiry solicitor, I am often immersed in the technical and legal aspects of systemic failings. However, events like this remind me of the real human stories behind the cases.

The book is a powerful call for change and a reminder of why public scrutiny, transparency, and reform are so vital.

The evening brought together family members, campaigners, legal professionals, and members of the public who have followed the Public Inquiry into the bombing. It was a solemn but empowering atmosphere. Listening to Saffie’s family speak about their journey, both through grief and through the complex systems of justice, was incredibly humbling. Their bravery in sharing Saffie’s story is not only a tribute to her memory but also a vital contribution to the broader conversation about public safety and institutional responsibility.

As someone working at the intersection of law and accountability, I left the event reminded of the importance of standing alongside those who seek justice. Saffie is not just a book; it’s a testament to a family’s enduring love and a community’s demand for change.

I encourage everyone, especially those involved in public service, law, or healthcare to read Saffie.
