Why JMW has chosen to support Horatio's Garden
At JMW, our clinical negligence team regularly supports individuals and families whose lives have been changed by spinal cord injuries caused by medical negligence. Through our work, we see first-hand the profound impact these injuries can have, not only on those affected but also on their loved ones.
We also work closely with the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) and Cauda Equina Champions Charity (CECC) who understand the importance of holistic support throughout a person's rehabilitation journey. Recovery is about much more than medical treatment alone. Access to supportive environments, opportunities for social connection and spaces that promote wellbeing can play a crucial role in helping people rebuild their lives after a spinal cord injury.
Horatio's Garden provides exactly this kind of support. Their gardens offer a welcoming sanctuary where people can spend time outdoors, take part in gardening sessions and arts workshops, and enjoy live music and events, as well as moments of calm, away from the clinical hospital environment.
By becoming a Corporate Friend of Horatio's Garden Sheffield & East, we hope to contribute to the charity's invaluable work and help ensure that more people living with spinal cord injuries can benefit from these remarkable spaces.

About Horatio's Garden
Horatio's Garden improves the lives of people with spinal injuries by creating and expertly staffing transformative gardens in NHS rehabilitation centres. These incredible gardens are essential to people’s rehabilitation after a life-changing injury, offering space for reflection and adjustment, privacy and solace and moments of joy and companionship for everyone who needs them. They have now established a network of stunning gardens at eight spinal injury centres nationwide, transforming often overlooked hospital spaces into empowering places of hope, beauty and inspiration.
Their gardens are named after Horatio Chapple, an aspiring doctor who tragically died on an expedition to Svalbard at the age of 17 in 2011. Horatio volunteered at the spinal injury centre in Salisbury and recognised how much people with spinal injuries and their families needed a garden as part of their time in hospital. He worked closely with patients to understand what a garden could offer and how it might be designed. The first garden opened in Salisbury in his honour in 2012 and since then his vibrant legacy has continued to grow.
The gardens are designed specifically for people adjusting to life-changing spinal cord injuries, as well as their families and friends, providing peaceful spaces where people can connect with nature, find comfort and support their physical and emotional recovery and wellbeing.

Having visited the Horatio’s Garden at the Sheffield Spinal Injuries Unit, I’ve seen first-hand the difference these spaces make. The gardens provide patients and their families with a peaceful sanctuary away from the clinical environment.
In April 2026 I ran the London Landmarks Half Marathon to raise funds, and in 2027 I’ll be taking on my first marathon in Manchester! I look forward to helping raise further awareness and continuing to support the charity’s invaluable work.”
