Update to the brake testing guidelines for HGV’s and trailers by the DVSA
The DVSA have introduced new methods for HGV and trailer brake testing.
From Thursday 21 August 2025, the DVSA approved the use of load simulation brake rollers for annual testing. This advanced method enhances the accuracy of brake testing and improves vehicle safety. Consequently, vehicles may no longer need to be loaded before testing.
Previously, Operators had to present vehicles in a laden condition for brake testing as per the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness. These new methods aim to save operators time and money, as traditional methods, while accurate, were time consuming and expensive.
Load simulation offers an alternative for testing when traditional methods are challenging or costly. Furthermore, this approach is expected to reduce the environmental impact of moving heavily loaded vehicles solely for brake testing purposes.
Vehicles that are currently exempt from laden brake testing will still be exempt. However, it is considered best practice to test even if an exemption applies.
