JMW medical negligence team goes from strength-to-strength

The JMW medical negligence team is going from strength-to-strength after adding a further solicitor to its ranks with the promotion of Nick Young.

The news comes hot on the heels of the recruitment of solicitor Ciaran Harper from Bolton firm Asons and paralegal Francesca Powell and is thanks to continued business growth.

Nick won a position as a solicitor after passing key qualifications and working in the department as a paralegal for the last two years. His promotion made way for the recruitment of Francesca.

Nick and Ciaran will deal with a wide range of claims on behalf of patients who have been injured, or families of patients killed, by poor medical care. They will also support senior solicitors on complex brain and spinal injury cases.

Eddie Jones, a partner at JMW and head of the medical negligence team, commented: “I am delighted that we are in a position to offer these opportunities to talented individuals. Nick has developed great expertise in the medical negligence field during his time with us and his passion for patient safety and client care stand him in good stead for his new role."

Before joining JMW Nick trained as a barrister and worked as a county court advocate, assisting people with small claims and debt matters.

He developed an interested in patient safety while volunteering at charity Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) which led him to pursue a career representing patients and families affected by medical negligence.

Ciaran qualified as a solicitor in September 2012 after completing a training contract at a law firm in Essex.

He has expertise in a wide range of claims and has represented patients with many different types of injury caused by poor medical care.

Ciaran has degrees in both law and Japanese and studied for a year at Kumamoto University, Japan.

Francesca provides administrative assistance to the specialist solicitors in the team and helps to ensure cases run smoothly.

After completing a history degree at Lancaster University, Francesca completed the GDL and LPC legal qualifications at the BPP Law School in Manchester. She gained a distinction in her personal injury and clinical negligence elective. Following this Francesca went on to study for a qualification in Professional Legal Practice.

Francesca is extremely passionate about patient safety and quality of care and whilst studying worked for three years at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust as a clinical governance support worker within the Children, Women and Families Division.
