Making a Claim for Urinary Tract Damage

The bladder or ureters can be damaged during a hysterectomy if the normal anatomy is grossly distorted due to cancer or other types of pelvic disease, such as endometriosis. As the uterus is anatomically very close to the bladder, and the two cavities need separating before removal is possible, damage to the urinary tract is sometimes unavoidable during difficult surgery.

However, damage should be recognised and, where possible, immediately remedied by the medical professional in charge of your care. Many claims result from a doctor or nurse failing to recognise the symptoms of a perforated bladder or obstructed ureter, rather than from incompetent or careless surgical technique.

Damage to the urinary tract can also occur while opening the abdomen, particularly if you have undergone previous Caesarean sections, as there may only be a very thin layer of scar tissue separating the two cavities.
