Championing the Bicycle: Why We Celebrate World Bicycle Day

Today (3rd June 2025) marks World Bicycle Day, a time to reflect on one of the simplest yet most powerful and versatile inventions ever created. At JMW, we see bicycles not just as a means of transport, but as a symbol of sustainability, health, and freedom.

Whilst my day-to-day role focuses on supporting those injured in cycling accidents, today I would like to take a moment to celebrate the bicycle itself and everything it represents.

A sustainable choice

Bicycles are a low-impact mode of transport that produce zero emissions. In an age where reducing our carbon footprint is more important than ever, choosing a bike over a car, whether for commuting, errands or leisure is one of the most effective and easy ways to contribute to a greener planet.

Clean, reliable, and affordable

Unlike cars, bicycles require no fuel and minimal maintenance. They’re reliable, easy to park and can often get you from A to B faster during rush hour traffic!  In terms of affordability, cycling is far more economical than driving or public transport in the long run, especially as fuel and fare prices continue to rise.

Great for your health

Cycling is not just good for the environment; it’s fantastic for your physical and mental health. Regular cycling can help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, improve cardiovascular fitness and support mental wellbeing. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the clarity and calm a good bike ride* can bring.

A rite of passage

Cycling is often an activity intertwined with meaningful traditions. For children, learning how to ride a bicycle without stabilisers is a rite of passage or graduating from the balance bike to the pedal bike.  All big milestones to be celebrated!  My Son’s primary has a bike park so he can ride to school and back and Brake (the Road Safety Charity) have been working hard with and in schools to encourage road safety skills.

A friendly reminder

While today is about celebrating the benefits of cycling we also want to acknowledge that cyclists remain vulnerable road users. At JMW Solicitors LLP we’re passionate about ensuring that all road users can travel safely and with confidence. If you or someone you know has been involved in a cycling accident whether that involves with another road user or with a defect on the highway our dedicated team is here to help with expert legal support and understanding.

So today, whether you're an everyday cyclist or someone considering taking it up we encourage you to get out, get pedalling and enjoy the ride.

Happy World Bicycle Day 2025 from all of us at JMW!

*weather permitting
